Canjilón Mountain is a 10,922-foot summit in northern New Mexico within Carson National Forest, about six miles northeast of the village of Canjilón. Its name comes from Northern New Mexican Spanish, where cajilon means “deer antler,” a reference to the mountain’s resemblance to an antler. That image also gave rise to the names of nearby features including Canjilon Creek, the Canjilon Lakes, and the village itself. Beyond its role as a prominent geographic landmark in the forested high country, the mountain was also the site of a small magnitude 3.7 earthquake on June 4, 2008.
