Known as “Quick Silver Charley,” he began snow-shoe racing in 1854, became Sierra County Surveyor in 1870, served as Deputy U.S. Surveyor in 1871, became Plumas County Surveyor in 1879, and served as Plumas County Supervisor in 1910, still snow-shoeing to Quincy for meetings past the age of 80.
