Eleutherian Mills was built about half-a-mile upstream from this location. By 1803, the complex included the du Pont family home, which also served as the DuPont Company offices. Extensive gardens and orchards soon produced food for the growing family and company workers. DuPont recorded its first sale in 1804, just two years after the du Pont family's arrival to the Brandywine. Less than a decade later, the War of 1812 pitted the United States against Great Britain, and increased demand for black powder led DuPont to purchase more land to expand production. The additional 90 acres, including this area, were purchased in 1813. A previous owner had named the area Hagley, and DuPont kept the name. Black powder was produced at Hagley until 1921.
