Smith's Bridge was originally constructed in 1839 as a Burr Truss covered bridge. It was rehabilitated in 1956 with piers and steel beams added, destroyed by fire in 1961, reconstructed without a cover in 1962, and reconstructed with Burr trusses and a cover in 2002. Engineering and project management were provided by Delaware DOT; the general contractor was Eastern States Construction Service, Inc.; timber framing was done by Pocopson Industries, Inc.; steel framing was done by High Steel Structures, Inc.; and stone masonry was done by Anthony Pesce and Son. The bridge was dedicated to the Smith's Bridge Working Group and the local community, whose involvement and support made the project possible.
