Rockingham County covers 876 square miles. It was formed in 1778 from Augusta and named for the Marquis of Rockingham, a British statesman. John Sevier of Tennessee was born there. The battles of Cross Keys and Port Republic took place in the county in 1862. Page County covers 322 square miles. It was formed in 1831 from Shenandoah and Rockingham and named for John Page, Governor of Virginia from 1802 to 1805. Luray Cave is in this county.
