Dinosaur Valley State Park preserves a landscape where dinosaurs once roamed and where visitors can touch fossilized tracks more than 100 million years old. Along the Paluxy River, erosion has exposed these tracks over time, and some scientists believe they reveal an epic struggle between predator and prey. The trackway beyond this site represents a real fossil trackway discovered here in 1938 and later taken to the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Made in fresh mud, the original tracks were protected from erosion for millions of years and remained deep and in almost perfect condition. The original trackway discovered by Roland T. Bird along the Paluxy River contained three-toed theropod tracks and large saucer-shaped sauropod tracks, and Bird's crew excavated it in 1940.
