Minidoka National Historic Site preserves the history of the Minidoka War Relocation Center in south-central Idaho and the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial in Washington. From 1942 to 1945, Minidoka imprisoned more than 13,000 Japanese Americans under the forced removal policies that followed Executive Order 9066. One of ten War Relocation Authority camps, it developed into a confined town with housing blocks, schools, shops, and recreation halls while inmates also labored in farming and other projects. The site is also tied to Japanese American military service and today remains a place of remembrance for a major wartime violation of civil liberties in the United States.
