Readying to Retreat
Military
One day after the October 7 battle, General Burgoyne reassembled his army on these bluffs and in the valley below as the defeated, discouraged, and hungry British Army prepared to retreat north along the Hudson River and river road, the same route it had used in its attempt to march south and take Albany. Burgoyne delayed the retreat to fulfill the dying wish of his beloved Brigadier-General Simon Fraser, who had been mortally wounded in the previous day's battle and chose this location for burial because of the beauty of the view.
