Shriver's Salt Water Taffy & Fudge is the oldest business on the boardwalk in Ocean City, N.J. William Shriver founded it in 1898 as a restaurant, candy and ice cream store. In 1959, four brothers who owned a chain of ice cream, restaurant, and confection stores throughout Philadelphia under the name Dairy Maid purchased the business. They kept the name and, drawing on their knowledge of candy, age-old recipes, and experience, perfected salt water taffy into one of the most famous boardwalk treats of all time. More than 115 years later, the business is still owned and operated by the same family, three generations later, and its combination of a working factory and retail store gives Ocean City a distinctive candy-making and shopping experience.
