At Charles Towne, Native Americans, English, Africans, and Barbadians came together to create the first successful English colony in Carolina. Through their interactions with one another and with the land, each group made important contributions and shaped the region’s history. During the settlement’s first 10 years, settlers landed, lived, and worked at Albermarle Point, where fortifications, a trading ship, crop gardens, and the surrounding landscape formed part of this early colonial community.
