Double Mountain is the highest point in California’s Tehachapi Mountains, standing south of the town of Tehachapi, Highway 58, and Tehachapi Pass. Its name comes from its two summits, which rise to nearly the same elevation. Because of its height, the mountain receives winter snowfall, standing out from the drier country around Tehachapi Pass. The broad crest south of the peak has a steep eastern flank and is also significant in natural history as the southern end of the range of the hybrid Alvord oak, Quercus × alvordiana.
