After crossing the Cumberland River near Rome, Morgan's Cavalry Division bivouacked about 3 miles southwest of here. Near here at about sundown, Lt. Col. W.W. Ward, with a detail from the 9th Tennessee Cavalry, captured a Federal wagon train carrying mail, property, and sutlers' stores, while most of the guard and train personnel fled. The next morning, the division left Tennessee by way of Gainesboro and Livingston.
