On July 4, 1823, Father Altimra set up a Camp Alter and planted the Holy Cross at this site. Troops fired a volley, the Padre sang in adoration of the cross, and a Mass was celebrated in gratitude. The place was named San Francisco Solano, and the Mission was later built at its present site in Sonoma.
