At this place stood the first flour mill in this valley, built by John Alward about 1772 and destroyed by Indians in 1779. A second mill was built on the same site by Henry Shoemaker in 1763, and a third mill was built about 1800 by Jacob, son of Henry Shoemaker. The Shoemaker family owned and operated the mill until 1872, and the mill was demolished and its materials sold in 1918.
