Charles O. Maddox, a banker, farmer, and conservationist, purchased and held eighteen hundred acres of land for eighteen years. In 1954, he transferred the land to the State of Georgia at no personal gain, and his vision was fulfilled by the founding of Fort Yargo State Park.
