On June 22, 1942, the Flag Code became Public Law 77-623, Chapter 435, stating that when the flag is no longer a fitting emblem for display, it should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning. The code establishes the flag of the United States of America as a living symbol of freedom that should be retired with dignity. Damaged American flags placed here are collected by American Legion Post No. 28 in Perrysburg, Ohio, handled respectfully until retirement, and retired by fire so flags determined improper to represent the United States of America will never be flown again.
