At the start of the Civil War, emotions ran high in Delaware County, and when President Lincoln called up the war's first Union soldiers, many local men volunteered without knowing how long, bitter, and bloody the conflict would become. Willcox Mills, at the former site of Sarum Forge, produced many kinds of paper, including paper used for bank notes and currency, and it may have made the paper on which Union currency was printed, helping finance that side of the war. The mills also gained worldwide fame for inventing an anti-counterfeiting process involving localized fibers. The period is also reflected in local veterans and soldiers, including Civil War veterans honored at Bethlehem Methodist Episcopal Church, African American Civil War veterans laid to rest at the AME church, and Thornbury's Joseph Pratt, who served as First Lieutenant in Company D, 124th, and as Captain in Company I, 29th Pennsylvania Emergency Militia.
