Pioneer Casey McKay, great-grandfather of George C. McKay, settled here with his family in 1834. He and his son Chauncey, grandfather of the donor, erected the original portions of the community church and grist mill, along with many other buildings still standing. Casey McKay was chosen first moderator of Ross Township School District No. 4 when it was organized on May 23, 1839.
