Donaldsonville and nearby communities produced or were associated with a wide range of jazz and related musicians, including Claiborne Williams, George Williams, Bella Sullivan, Albert Carroll, Homer Richard, the Leonard Jullen Orchestra, Plas Johnson, Richard M. Jones, Emanuel Sayles, George "Pops" Foster, the St. Joseph Brass Band, Sidney Joseph, and Bill Summers from Donaldsonville; Renald Richard and Thaddous Richard from Thibodaux; Harrison Verrett, Papa Celestin, and Worthla "Showboy" Thomas from Napoleonville; Clarence Williams from Plaquemine; Papa John Joseph from St. James; Kid Ory from LaPlace; Joe "King" Oliver from Abend; and Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, Walter Lewis, Louis Armstrong, Don Vapple, and Fats Domino from New Orleans, as well as Dave Bartholomew from Edgard and Leo Nocentelli from Donaldsonville/New Orleans. A Donaldsonville Chief notice of October 23, 1920, called Claiborne Williams's band of Donaldsonville, Louisiana, the best jazz band in America.
