This cemetery contains 421 unknown Confederate soldiers, four known Confederate soldiers, and four unknown Federal soldiers. Some died of wounds received in the Battles of Stone's River, Perryville, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, and other battles fought north of here. Others died of disease and sickness. Several important Confederate hospitals stood here from 1862 to 1864, where thousands were treated and nursed back to health, before the hospitals were moved south of this point in early May 1864 to avoid the path of invading Federals.
