McMahan’s Chapel, two miles southeast, is the oldest Methodist church in Texas with a continuous existence. It was organized as a "religious society" in September 1833 by the Reverend James P. Stevenson, 1808-1885, and as a Methodist church in July 1834 by the Reverend Henry Stephenson. Its first building was completed in 1839, and new buildings replaced it in 1872 and again in 1900.
