Cuivre River State Park in northeastern Missouri is a large public recreation area in the Lincoln Hills, spanning more than 6,400 acres of grasslands, savannas, limestone bluffs, forests, streams, and open country. Established in the 1930s as a federal recreation demonstration area, it was shaped by Civilian Conservation Corps and Works Project Administration crews that built roads, bridges, camps, shelters, and service facilities. Missouri acquired the park in 1946, and its New Deal-era development still defines much of its historic character, including areas listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. The park also protects significant natural areas and supports camping, fishing, swimming, canoeing, hiking, cycling, and horseback riding.
