Fort Selden stood about 2 miles northwest and was occupied in 1816-17 and 1819-22. Its purpose was to police the southwestern frontier and guard the Red River and Bayou Pierre. Gen. Edmund P. Gaines, commander of the Western Department, had his headquarters here for a time.
