A furniture business was established at this location in 1913 by Watson Snyder. In 1927 Alfred Dau purchased the site from Snyder and, about 1940, decided to move the Petoskey Housefurnishing Company to Bay View Road. Also in 1927, James A. Reid, who had been an officer in the Housefurnishing Company during the Snyder era, opened his own business just up the street at 315 East Mitchell, where he sold fine furniture as well as rugs, linoleum, draperies, stoves, ranges, and Philco radios. When Dau moved the Housefurnishing Company from Main Street Petoskey, James A. Reid bought the 307 East Mitchell address. The business then passed to his son, James M. Reid, in the early 1950s, continued in the late 1980s under James M. Reid Jr., and in the early 2000s James M. Reid III became the fourth generation to run it.
