Two bronze statues titled "Becoming" portray Elvis's transformation from boyhood in East Tupelo to worldwide entertainer. Each figure represents a stage in the life of the same man born on common soil in East Tupelo, and their placement at the highest point of the property pays homage to his beginnings. The life-size statue shows Elvis at 11, evoking a poor young boy who ran the hills and hollows of East Tupelo with his friends, sat on a milk crate with mussed hair and a hole in one sock, strummed his guitar, and looked toward downtown Tupelo as he began to dream of a better life. The larger-than-life figure represents Elvis the Entertainer at the finale of a performance, with arms outstretched, cape flowing, and head tilted skyward, signifying both the end of a performance and the end of his life. He became a larger-than-life personality whose influence on music was revolutionary worldwide, while maintaining a humble spirit true to his roots in East Tupelo.
