Cossatot River State Park-Natural Area protects a rugged, largely undeveloped stretch of the Cossatot River in western Arkansas, preserving steep river scenery, old-growth hardwoods, juniper glades, and rare plants and animals tied to the Ouachita Mountains. Added to the state park system in 1988 after years of negotiation, land acquisition, and cooperative planning, it remains notable for keeping much of the river wild in character. The Cossatot is one of the central United States' more demanding float rivers, with frequent Class III and IV water and some Class V rapids that attract experienced paddlers. Recreation facilities are intentionally modest, balancing access, camping, trails, and education with natural preservation.
