William Shaw Hadfield was the first white settler of Logan County, and the site of his first sod house stood at Hadfield Island in 1871, three-fourths mile east. His wife, Margaret Seibert Hadfield, honored him under the auspices of the Elbridge Gerry Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
