Originally called Crossroads and later New Market, this community began as a trading post with Indians established in 1767. During the Revolution, the New Market Blues, a volunteer militia company, were organized here in a supply center for the Continental Army. On Main Street stands the Old House of the Hinges, so called because of the ironwork on its outbuildings. It was the home of Major Anthony Manning, who served in the War of 1812, and of his son, Dr. Anthony Manning, a Union surgeon in the Civil War. By the 1780s, the town had become a center of American Methodism. New Market Academy was founded in 1818, the town was renamed East New Market in 1827, and it was incorporated in 1884.
