On November 27, 1863, the 60th, 102nd, 137th, and 149th New York Infantry regiments of Ireland's Third Brigade, Geary's Second Division, Slocum's Twelfth Corps, in Hooker's command of the 11th and 12th Corps, Army of the Potomac, were ordered from Stone Railroad depot to this point at about 10:30 A.M. during the battle. Advancing in good order under heavy artillery and musketry fire, the brigade held a line from the railroad to East Chickamauga Creek. Fighting was severe on both sides until the enemy finally withdrew at about 1 P.M. Skirmishers of the brigade under Captain Lewis R. Stegman of the 102nd New York then advanced, cleared the gap in front, and gained possession of two railroad bridges and a mill. About 500 officers and men were engaged, and casualties totaled 59 killed and wounded, including 1 wounded on the staff, 2 killed and 15 wounded in the 60th New York, 2 killed and 7 wounded in the 102nd New York, 1 killed and 15 wounded in the 137th New York, and 3 killed and 13 wounded in the 149th New York.
