Founded about 1855 as Lane's Chapel by settlers from Alabama, including Texas Declaration of Independence signer William Menefee, this Methodist congregation first met in a log cabin about 6 miles northeast, then erected a church school building in 1859 at Pine Springs. Flatonia was founded in 1873, and services at Pine Springs lapsed when the church burned in 1874 as members began moving to town. Worship continued in homes until this church was built in 1879.
