Fort Miller stood from 1851 to 1866 about one mile north of this site, and the pioneer town of Millerton existed from 1851 to 1874 about one and one-half miles northwest on the then Visalia - Stockton Road. Both places are now covered by the waters of Millerton Lake. The first courthouse of Fresno County was built in 1887 in Millerton, and the county's first public school opened in the hospital building at Fort Miller in 1860. The granite blocks here were part of the old courthouse.
