The Pine River Site in Charlevoix, Michigan, preserves evidence of repeated human occupation from about 3000 BC through AD 1400, including Archaic, Middle Woodland, and Late Woodland material. Artifacts such as chert from the Pewangoing Quarry, partially finished tools, animal remains, and edible plants indicate the movement of raw material and the processing of food and tools there over a long span of time. In the modern era, the old Beach Hotel occupied the location from 1899 to 1967. Although archaeological remains had long been reported, formal investigation began only after the hotel burned in 1970, and the site gained national historic recognition in 1972.
