El Alisal was built from 1897 to 1910 by Charles F. Lummis, a writer, editor, and founder of the Southwest Museum. It was declared Historic Cultural Monument No. 68 by the Cultural Heritage Board, Municipal Arts Department, City of Los Angeles, and was commemorated by NSDAR Chapters during the U.S.A. Bicentennial on February 23, 1975.
