On April 18, 1865, at the Battle of Boykin's Mill, 15-year-old Burwell Boykin, a volunteer with the South Carolina Home Guard and son of Col. Alexander Hamilton Boykin, fought at this site defending his home. About 1/4 mile west of this site, 1st Lt. E.L. Stevens of the 54th Massachusetts Infantry fell during the battle; he was the last Federal officer killed in the Civil War. Forces identified here include the South Carolina Home Guard, 9th Kentucky Mounted Infantry, 53rd Alabama Cavalry, 54th Massachusetts Infantry, 25th Ohio Infantry, 107th Ohio Infantry, 32nd USCT, 102nd USCT, 4th Massachusetts Cavalry, 3rd New York Artillery, and 1st New York Engineers.
