Sheep Mountain
Nature
Sheep Mountain is a 10,552-foot peak in Park County, Montana, about six miles north of Gardiner in the northern Absaroka Range within the Absaroka–Beartooth Wilderness and Gallatin National Forest. It is distinguished by dramatic local relief, rising roughly 2,000 feet above Bassett Creek in one mile and more than 5,400 feet above the Yellowstone River in four miles, making it especially prominent in the surrounding landscape. Runoff from the mountain feeds tributaries of the Yellowstone River. Its subarctic climate brings long, very cold winters, mild summers, and winter conditions that can drop below 0 °F with wind chills under −10 °F.
