West Dennis Light, originally Bass River Light, stands at the mouth of Bass River on Nantucket Sound in an unusual form: a lighthouse built into a house, now atop the Lighthouse Inn in West Dennis, Massachusetts. After earlier guidance from a private home's window, the federal government funded a lighthouse in 1850; construction began in 1854 and the light entered service in 1855. Once a common Cape Cod design, this roof-centered tower is now the only surviving example of its type there. The light was discontinued twice before becoming part of an inn property, then was relit in 1989 and today operates seasonally as a rare privately owned working lighthouse.
