The Tybrisa pier and pavilion on Tybee Island began around the turn of the 20th century as a segregated event venue for the Georgia of Central Railroad, with a bandstand, dance floor, and bath houses. It became the heart of Tybee’s entertainment district, linked by wooden walkways to every major hotel along the Strand. Over time, Tybrisa added roller skating and children’s rides by day and adult-oriented evening events such as dancing to music by Glenn Miller or Tommy Dorsey. The structure gradually declined, and because of an ownership dispute it closed to the public in 1963. In 1967, the building was burned by a disgruntled employee who had not received his wages. The current pier and pavilion was built in anticipation of Tybee hosting the 1996 Summer Olympics beach volleyball competition, and although Tybee Island was not chosen to host it, Tybrisa was rebuilt in August 1996 and again serves as an event venue for Tybee Island.
