President Franklin Roosevelt's New Deal was a sweeping Great Depression stimulus project. The Work Progress Administration put millions to work constructing public buildings, sidewalks, and roads, and employed musicians, artists, writers, architects, and actors to preserve America's cultural legacies. The Civilian Conservation Corps founded public land natural resources conservation and development. These amenities still define the character of national, regional, and local parks and recreational sites. In this town, New Deal heritage includes the courthouse, schools and other buildings, WPA-stamped sidewalks, and a Post Office mural. El Paso architect Henry Trost designed this WPA elementary school, currently the County Administration Offices, in 1937 at 100 N Date Street.
