Fanny M. Jackson Coppin was an educator, writer, humanist, and missionary. A former slave, she graduated from Oberlin College in 1865 and served as principal of the Institute for Colored Youth from 1869 to 1902. Coppin pioneered industrial arts and teacher education. The Institute for Colored Youth became Cheyney University in 1983.
