Marching southeast from Bethel Springs by way of Purdy, Cheatham’s Division of the Confederate Army of the Mississippi passed here en route to join the army for its attack at Shiloh. The location of this force had caused Grant, the Federal commander, to deploy Lew Wallace’s division on a broad front facing north, with its left at Adamsville, 6 miles east, in expectation of an attack.
