At the request of Great Britain, more than 700 prisoner-of-war camps were built in the United States to help relieve overcrowding in British camps. On August 14, 1945, three months after Germany surrendered and the day before Japan surrendered, 250 prisoners arrived at Camp Napa on the Silverado Trail just north of Yountville as a branch facility of Camp Beale. The prisoners worked on surrounding farms and were paid $0.80 per day, and local citizens often attended social activities at the camp. After the war ended, most prisoners were repatriated to Germany, though many later returned to the United States to renew acquaintances with former employers, start families, begin new careers, and become citizens.
