Schroeder Mountain, a 6,942-foot summit in northern California’s Sierra Nevada within Tahoe National Forest, is a steep, trail-less peak in Sierra County that remains a distinctive local landmark. Some nearby cabin owners have long called it Fuzz Top because its vegetation looks fuzzy from a distance. The mountain is named for John Schroeder, an Indiana-born pioneer who came west in 1852, worked in mining, land dealing, ranching, freight hauling, and farming, and became part of the early development of the Sierra Valley region. His life traced the wider course of post-Gold Rush settlement, and the mountain’s name preserves that history.
