North of New Edinburg in Arkansas, this site preserves part of the battlefield where the Battle of Marks' Mills was fought on April 25, 1864, during the Camden Expedition in the Civil War's Trans-Mississippi Theater. A Union column from Frederick Steele's army, moving from Camden toward Pine Bluff for supplies, ran into a Confederate force under James F. Fagan positioned at the road junction. The clash ended in a decisive Confederate victory, with about 2,000 Union soldiers captured along with four guns and 240 empty supply wagons. The battle is especially remembered for the murder of black Union soldiers as they tried to surrender.
