Hunting Camp Creek Wilderness in southwestern Virginia is an 8,471-acre protected area in the George Washington and Jefferson National Forests, created in 2009 to remain in a natural condition under the federal wilderness system. About five miles west of Bland, it includes a 9.7-mile stretch of the Appalachian Trail often regarded as one of the wildest parts of the southern Appalachians. Long ridges, narrow valleys, streams, varied forests, wetlands, and possible old-growth stands support rich plant and animal life, including rare species. Light federal management limits vehicles, equipment, bikes, group size, and camping to preserve its undeveloped character.
