The Congressman Lester Wolff Oyster Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Long Island’s north shore protects the waters and marshes of Oyster Bay, preserving high-quality marine habitat and an important coastal sanctuary. Surrounding Sagamore Hill, the home of President Theodore Roosevelt, it also carries historical significance because Roosevelt is regarded as the founder of the National Wildlife Refuge System. Its subtidal waters support marine invertebrates, shellfish, and fish, which in turn sustain waterfowl, fish-eating birds, and marine mammals. More than 25 species of waterfowl depend on Oyster Bay, with especially heavy use from October through April, while harbor seals, sea turtles, and diamondback terrapins are also seen here.
