Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States of America, and his party camped near here in a wooded area while trying to reach Mobile during his flight from Federal soldiers. The party, on horseback, stopped at Warthen’s Store to purchase food supplies for man and beast and were directed to a secluded spot on what was then known as Griffin’s Pond. From there Davis and his party proceeded to a point in Irwin County where they were overtaken by Union soldiers and captured.
