Lock No. 12 stands here as one of 23 lift locks on the Delaware Canal, numbered from Bristol to Easton, and just above it is one of nine aqueducts that carried the canal and its traffic across small streams. The Delaware Division from Bristol to Easton was part of the Pennsylvania Canal, a system of state-built public works intended to connect Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Lake Erie; it was begun in 1827, operated by the state from 1831 to 1858, then by private owners until 1931, and it has been a State Park since 1940.
