Wakulla Springs in north Florida is a first-magnitude spring and major outlet of the Floridan Aquifer, feeding the Wakulla River and opening into an extensive underwater cave system beneath the Woodville Karst Plain. Its immense flow and long-surveyed passages have made it a significant scientific site, yielding fossils of extinct Ice Age mammals and evidence suggesting very early human presence more than 13,000 years ago. In the twentieth century it also became a well-known tourist destination and film location, centered on the Wakulla Springs Lodge. Today it remains valued for wildlife, recreation, and scenery while facing water-quality threats from nitrate pollution and stormwater runoff.
