In 1995, after years of research, Dr. G. Michael Pratt led an archeological survey on a field west of the floodplain that had previously been believed to be the site of the battle. The dig uncovered artifacts including buckshot, rifle fragments, and frog-legged eagle buttons unique to Wayne's legion. Combined with a detailed remote sensing survey in 2001, this became conclusive proof that the Battle of Fallen Timbers took place on this site. The legion buttons were worn only by General Wayne's legion from 1792 to 1796, and many were found grouped at a location thought to be the shallow graves of fallen soldiers.
