Long before Ohio became a state, the forests of western Ohio were hunting grounds for Native American tribes. As early as 1782, Shawnee tribes established a community on the banks of the Auglaize River called Waughpaughkonnetta. The Treaty of Greenville in 1792 provided the Shawnee, under Chief Blackhoof, a 100 square mile reservation with Wapakoneta at its center, while the Hog Creek Shawnee received a 25 square mile reservation north of it. What later became Cridersville's Main Street is said to have been the trail between the two reservations. In 1832, the Shawnee were forced to leave Ohio for new lands in the Kansas territory, and their removal opened western Ohio to pioneer settlement.
